How do I choose the right charger for my electric vehicle?

by sipinglong on March 30, 2024

With the further development of battery technology, electric cars are increasingly becoming our daily means of transportation. When you buy an electric vehicle (EV), one of the most important considerations is how you will charge it and how to choose the right charging device.

The first decision usually revolves around whether to install a home charging station or rely on public charging infrastructure. Home charging stations offer comfort: you can charge your electric vehicle overnight and ensure it is ready for the daily commute to work. The portable charger for electric vehicles will be your best companion when traveling.

To choose the right charger, you need to know the alternating current charging power, the plug types, the type of home outlet, the charging distance (wall-mounted or portable), and other features. .

1. AC-charging power
Various car manufacturers offer different capacities for maximum AC charging power. Please first read through the owner's manual of your vehicle to obtain information on the maximum alternating current charging power. Typically, cars can accept maximum charging powers in four steps:3.5 kW, 7 kW, 11 kW, and 22 kW.
When choosing a charger, it is advisable to select one that matches the maximum power your car can absorb. If the charger's power rating is lower than your car's capacity, the maximum charging power will be determined by the charger's output power. Conversely, if the charger's power exceeds your car's capacity, the maximum charging power will be limited by your car's reception capability.

2. The type of charging connection (plug types)
AC-charging ports for Autos werden normalerweise in drei Typen unterteilt:
Type 2: European Standard, cars manufactured in the EU use this standard charging connector
Type1: American Standard. Imported vehicles from the USA usually use this standard charging socket.
GBT: Chinesischer Standard. In China hergestellte Autos werden diesen Standard-Ladeanschluss verwenden.
Please open the cover of your car charging port and check the type of your car charging port. Please make sure to choose the correct type when ordering a charger.

3. Steckdosentyp
chargers with different powers require different types of sockets. In the following, we will only present the four common types of sockets.
3,5-kW-charging device: 220 V, 16 A, EU-Schuko-Steckdose, einphasig
7KW charging device: 220V 32A CEE32A blaue Steckdose, einphasig (drei holes)
11KW charging device: 380V 16A CEE16A rote Steckdose, dreiphasig (five holes)
22KW charging device: 380V 32A CEE32A rote Steckdose, dreiphasig (five holes)

4. charging distance
Please select the length of the charging cable according to the distance between parking spot and outlet.
Most buyers opt for the standard cable length of 5 meters, which covers most daily charging scenarios.
If your car is parked in the garage, however, you can choose a cable length of 3 meters, which is sufficient.
If the parking space is outside the garden, you can choose a length of 10 meters or 15 meters.

5.wall-mounted or portable
The other is a portable charger that can be used at home and taken with you in the car to charge the car at work or on trips. And through the installation of fixed mounting accessories, it can also be used as a wall box.
Every charging device has its own advantages and we recommend buying a charger according to the actual need.

6 weitere Funktionen
When buying a charger, we also consider other factors, including whether it supports WiFi/WLAN connectivity. By installing the app on your smartphone, you can control the charging data in real time. Since the charger has an adaptive voltage regulation function, different charge currents can be selected for various cars and socket types. And some chargers offer a charge light reservation feature.
